Lock Rekeying Service

Rekeying works because your lock doesn't actually recognize your key - it recognizes a pattern of pins inside the cylinder. Those pins line up at specific heights when the correct key is inserted, allowing the cylinder to turn. When we rekey, we replace those pins with a new set that matches a new key. Your old key no longer aligns the pins correctly, so it stops working entirely.

The process takes about 10-15 minutes per lock. We remove the cylinder from your door (the lock stays in place), disassemble it on our mobile workstation, swap the pins, reassemble, reinstall, and test. You get new keys cut on site. If you want all your locks to work with the same key - front door, back door, garage entry - we set them up as a matched set during the rekey.

This is less invasive than changing locks entirely. We're not drilling new holes, modifying your doors, or dealing with new hardware that might not match your home's aesthetic. Your locks look identical before and after. The only difference is which keys work in them.

Rekeying runs $25-45 per lock depending on the lock type and keyway. Standard Kwikset and Schlage locks fall at the lower end. High-security locks like Medeco or Mul-T-Lock cost more because they have more pins and require specialized parts. We offer discounts when rekeying multiple locks - a typical 4-lock Austin home costs $85-120 total.
