Lost Key Replacement in Austin, TX

Your keys aren't where you always put them. You've checked your pockets, your bag, the couch cushions, the car - nothing. Maybe they fell out somewhere, maybe someone took them, maybe you'll find them next week under a pile of mail. Either way, right now you need access and you need to think about security. Lost keys represent both an immediate access problem and a potential security threat. Someone has your keys. They might be sitting in a Zilker Park porta-john, or they might be in the hands of someone who knows where you live. We handle both concerns - making new keys so you can get in, and optionally rekeying your locks so the lost keys become useless. Since 2008, we've helped thousands of Austin residents recover from lost key situations, from house keys dropped at ACL Festival to car keys that vanished on Rainey Street.

Immediate Access: Getting Into Your Home or Car

When you've lost your keys, the first problem is getting inside. If you're locked out right now, that's a lockout call - we'll get you in the same way we would for any other lockout, then address the key replacement separately. Many lost key calls involve people who are inside but realize they can't get back in once they leave.

For home keys, we can create new keys from your existing locks. This involves either reading the lock cylinder to determine the key code, or removing a cylinder and decoding it. Either way, we produce working keys without needing the originals. If you have a deadbolt and doorknob that use the same key, we'll make keys for both.

For car keys, the process depends on your vehicle. Basic mechanical keys can be cut from the door or ignition lock. Transponder keys - standard on most vehicles since the early 2000s - require both cutting the physical key and programming the chip. We carry programming equipment for most makes and can complete the process on site.

If you still have access through a spare key or because you're currently inside, you have time to decide about rekeying. But don't put it off indefinitely - the security risk from lost keys doesn't go away just because you have access.

The Security Question: Should You Rekey?

Lost keys create security risk proportional to how identifiable they are. Keys on a blank ring that fell out of your pocket at an anonymous location? Probably low risk - whoever finds them would have no way to connect them to your address. Keys on a ring with your gym membership card, car's license plate keychain, or anything else that links to your identity? Higher risk.

We recommend rekeying whenever: keys were lost along with identification (wallet, gym card, etc.), you're not sure where or when keys were lost, you have reason to believe keys were stolen rather than lost, or your peace of mind requires knowing old keys are useless.

Rekeying is faster and cheaper than many people expect. We change the internal pins of your existing locks so they work with new keys, but the old keys no longer fit. A typical home with 3-4 locks can be rekeyed in under an hour for $100-150 total. We can do it the same day as your new key service.

The alternative to rekeying is accepting ongoing risk. Maybe you'll find the keys. Maybe whoever has them will never know where you live. But 'maybe' isn't the same as secure. Our recommendation is almost always to rekey if there's any connection between your lost keys and your address.

Types of Lost Key Replacement We Handle

House and apartment keys are straightforward. We create new keys from your existing locks and can rekey at the same time. Most residential locks - Schlage, Kwikset, Baldwin, Weiser, and others - use standard pinning that we can decode and cut same-visit.

Car keys range from simple to complex. Basic mechanical keys (pre-2000 vehicles, some trucks) are cut-only with no programming required. Transponder keys need the chip programmed to your car's immobilizer. Smart keys and proximity fobs require additional programming steps. Push-to-start vehicles often need both a physical emergency key and fob programming. We handle all of these.

Office and commercial keys may involve master key systems. If you've lost a key that's part of a larger system, you may need to notify your building manager. We can cut replacement keys for your specific space and discuss options if the lost key affects system security.

High-security keys like Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and Abloy have restricted blanks. We can order replacements through authorized channels, but there's typically a waiting period and ownership verification. If you've lost high-security keys, start the replacement process sooner rather than later.

Process and Pricing for Lost Key Service

When you call, tell us what keys you lost - house, car, or both - and whether you're currently locked out. If you're locked out, we prioritize getting you access first. If you have access and need replacement keys, we can schedule same-day service at your convenience.

For car key replacement, we need make, model, year, and VIN. This ensures we bring the correct blanks and have the right programming information. Car key replacement typically runs $75-250 depending on key type - basic mechanical keys at the low end, smart keys with proximity features at the high end.

For house key replacement without rekeying, cost is $35-75 depending on the number of locks. With rekeying included, add $25-45 per lock. A typical package - new keys plus rekeying 3 exterior locks - runs $150-200 total.

We provide all pricing before starting work. There are no hidden fees or surprise charges after the fact. If you're deciding between just getting new keys versus full rekeying, we'll explain the trade-offs and let you choose what's right for your situation and budget.
